Privacy Policy
Overview
This Privacy Policy explains what Somnia ("we", "us") collects, why, and what choices you have when you use the Somnia mobile app. Somnia is a sleep and wake app: alarms, optional sleep tracking, sleep plans and educational content.
Most of your sleep data stays on your device. Sections 1 to 3 give the details.
Somnia is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition.
Questions: getsomnia@gmail.com.
1. What stays on your device
Your sleep schedule, sleep sessions and history, sleep diary entries, sleep plan, alarm and app settings, and the derived sleep metrics described below are stored on your device. The app does not currently upload this data to our servers, and it does not back it up or sync it between devices. If you uninstall the app, clear its data or switch to a new phone, this data is not restored.
We treat sleep-related data as sensitive and never sell it.
2. Information we collect
Account: Somnia creates an anonymous account when you first open the app. If you choose to sign in with email and password or with Google, we receive your email address and, for Google, the name and profile details Google shares with us. If you verify your email, our backend handles the email address and verification code.
Onboarding answers: such as your age and sleep habits. They are used on your device to build your sleep plan.
Feedback: if you send a suggestion, bug report or praise from Settings, we receive the message you write and its category, together with your account ID.
Subscriptions: purchases are made through Google Play. Google handles your payment details; we never see or store your card number. RevenueCat, our subscription provider, receives your purchase and subscription status so the app can unlock premium features.
Usage and diagnostics: if the "Anonymous analytics" setting is on, we use Firebase Analytics to collect app usage events (such as screens viewed). We also use Firebase Crashlytics for crash reports, which include device and app details such as device model, operating system version and app version. App Check helps us confirm requests come from a genuine copy of the app. We also use Firebase Performance Monitoring to measure app speed and startup; this is technical performance data, not sleep data.
Email: feedback and email verification messages are delivered by Resend, our email provider, which receives the recipient address and message content for that purpose.
Advertising ID: Somnia does not collect or use the Android Advertising ID.
We do not collect your precise location.
3. Microphone and motion sensing (optional)
Motion: if you turn on Enhanced Tracking, Somnia reads your phone's motion sensor (accelerometer) during a sleep session to estimate movement and restlessness. Only derived metrics, such as a movement index and quiet or disturbed minutes, are kept.
Microphone: sound sensing is optional and stays off unless you turn it on and grant the microphone permission. While it runs, Android shows a notification saying Somnia is monitoring sleep sounds. The microphone is read on your device only to work out loudness levels. Audio is analysed as it arrives and then discarded. Somnia does not record audio, does not save audio files, does not transcribe speech and does not upload audio anywhere. Only derived numbers and event markers are stored on your device, such as average and peak noise level, quiet percentage, number of noise spikes and possible snoring or talking markers. These markers are rough estimates and may be wrong.
You can deny or withdraw either permission in your device settings at any time. Without them, the rest of the app still works.
3a. Health Connect (optional)
If you choose to connect Health Connect on Android and grant permission, Somnia reads your sleep sessions and sleep stages. Somnia only reads this data; it does not write to Health Connect.
We use it only to show your sleep reports in the app. It is stored on your device. We do not use it for advertising, we do not sell or transfer it, and we do not send it to analytics or crash reporting.
You can revoke access at any time in Health Connect settings (Android Settings, then Health Connect, then App permissions, then Somnia). Without it, the rest of the app still works.
4. How we use information
To run your account and the app's features; to provide subscriptions and check your premium status; to answer your feedback and support requests; to keep the service secure and prevent abuse; to find and fix crashes and understand how features are used; and to meet legal obligations. We do not use your data for advertising and we do not sell it.
5. Who we share information with
We use service providers who process information for us:
- Firebase / Google (authentication, App Check, analytics, performance monitoring, crash reporting, and our database for account-related records and feedback)
- Google Play (purchases and billing)
- RevenueCat (subscription status)
- Resend (delivery of feedback and email verification messages)
- Vercel (hosting for our backend and website)
- Google Sign-In (if you choose to sign in with Google)
If you tap an affiliate or shop link, the other site (for example Amazon) handles what you do there under its own privacy policy. See the Affiliate Disclosure.
We may share information if the law requires it, to protect rights and safety, or if Somnia is involved in a merger, sale or similar transaction. We have not sold personal information or shared it for advertising.
6. Legal bases (EEA, UK and similar regions)
Where those laws apply, we rely on: your consent (for example for the microphone and optional analytics, which you can withdraw at any time); performance of a contract (providing the app and your subscription); legitimate interests (security, fixing problems, improving the app); and legal obligations.
7. Somnic AI chat has been removed
Earlier versions of Somnia included an AI chat feature called Somnic. It has been removed and no longer sends messages anywhere. Your sleep recommendations are calculated on your device by fixed rules, not by an AI service. Any chat messages from earlier versions that remain stored are deleted when you delete your account and can be included in your data export.
8. International transfers
Our service providers operate in the United States and other countries, so your information may be processed outside the country where you live. Where the law requires, we rely on safeguards offered by those providers, such as standard contractual clauses.
9. How long we keep information
Data on your device stays there until you delete it, reset the app, delete your account or uninstall. Account records and feedback we hold are kept while your account exists and are deleted when you delete your account, except where the law requires us to keep something longer. Records held by Google Play and RevenueCat follow their own retention rules.
10. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures, including encrypted connections to our services. No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee the security of your information. Keep your device and account credentials protected.
11. Children
Somnia is not intended for children under 13, and you must be at least 13 to use it. If you are under 18 (or the age of majority where you live), use Somnia only with the consent and supervision of a parent or guardian, who is responsible for any purchase. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
12. Your choices and rights
Export: go to Settings, then Trust & Privacy, and use "Export my data" to get a copy of your data in JSON format.
Delete: Settings has a "Delete account" option that deletes your account and data (see the Data Deletion Policy). You can also delete your account on the web at https://somniaapp.app/delete-account, or email us.
Other rights: depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or restrict use of your personal information, to object to processing, to data portability, to withdraw consent, and not to be treated unfairly for using your rights. To use a right, email getsomnia@gmail.com. If you disagree with our response, you may appeal by email, and you may complain to your local data protection authority or, in the US, your state attorney general.
Controls: you can turn analytics off in Settings, and turn off the microphone and other permissions in your device settings.
13. US state privacy information
Over the past 12 months we have collected these categories: identifiers (account ID, email if you provide it, device identifiers); commercial information (subscription status); internet or app activity (analytics, if enabled); sensor data (motion, and derived sound metrics if you opt in); health-related sleep information you enter, the app derives, or (if you opt in) you let the app read from Health Connect, which stays on your device; and inferences such as sleep scores and plans. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
14. Do Not Track
The app does not respond to Do Not Track signals. It does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. We will change the date at the top and, for material changes, give notice in the app or by email where appropriate. Continuing to use Somnia after an update means the updated policy applies.
